On music appreciation.

October 30, 2009

Note to self: Really, Serenity – it’s okay NOT to post if you have nothing but whining to post about.

Really. No one wants to read your complaining.

“Wah, my life is so hard.”

When really it’s pretty damn good.

I actually got to leave work on TIME yesterday in order to pick up O. And we had a great night – Lots of giggles and fun. He ate a good dinner, we sang songs on the way home from daycare, he chased me around the house, bathtime was good (and wet!) fun, and he snuggled with be before bed and gave me eskimo kisses before he went to sleep.

And last night J and I bought tickets for the three of us to the Kids’ Matinee of the Boston Holiday Pops.

It’s a 70 minute show, with no intermission, where kids can dance in the
aisles, do a Christmas carol sing-a-long, and meet and take pictures of Santa.

And it’s at Symphony Hall, and it’s classical music, and it means a trip for the three of us into Boston for the morning.

I am super, super excited about it.

And then I slept spectacularly, with no wake up in the middle of the night.

So I’m feeling a LOT better today.

O is REALLY into music these days.

A few weeks ago I bought him a CD of “First Sing-a-Long Songs.” He ADORES them. He does the motions for the Itsy Bitsy Spider. Then claps his hands and stomps his feet for “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” He’s starting to sing along with “Row Row Row Your Boat” – will yell “ROW! ROW! ROW! ROW!” during the instrumental part.

And in between every song, he says, hopefully, “More?”

And when the music comes back on, he claps and giggles with glee.

And any time he hears some music – doesn’t matter what it is – he dances.

Having played the clarinet for more than 20 years now, it’s really important for me that O has, at the very least, an APPRECIATION for music.

Of course I will LOVE it if he plays an instrument. And would absolutely ADORE if he loves it just as much as I do.

But I also know that I don’t want to be that parent that PUSHES my kid into doing something he otherwise wouldn’t do.

So right now? I LOVE that he’s aware of music, and dances to songs, and sings and asks for more whenever there’s quiet.

And all I want for him is that he appreciate music as much as J and I do.

I can’t wait for the Holiday Pops and see what he thinks.

And honestly? THIS is the magic of being a parent. Getting to experience something I love – music – through his eyes.

It’s just AWESOME.

Katherine LOVES music. She is a wiggler. She has wiggled and danced since she was just a few months old. I think BigP’s biggest concern is that she is going to be a stripper.

Oh, so cute! Cate likes music but she’s not that into yet.

QUIT apologizing for venting. Parenting is joyous-yes-but HARD. Add working a crazy job and sickness and months of sleep depravation-and you’d have to be a drone not to feel it, KWIM? You’re human, mama.

We did the Boston Pops a few years ago–I love sitting on the floor and having food and watching them. Michael had ice cream, etc.! We have always wanted to do the Holiday Show–I am sure you guys will have a BLAST!

Ah, I just finished reading the rest of your post—I also have similar feelings about music appreciation. My father is a musician, I played clarinet (on the other side, my BIL is in a local rock band in Detroit, my SIL played violin). I took Michael to music appreciation classes and such when he was younger. We like all sorts of music and he has been to many concerts—sometimes hilarious results ensue—like the time he was 6 years old at a Blind Boys of Alabama concert—and fell asleep during a rousing foot stamping, everyone around him dancing, gospel song (it was 10 p.m. by that point).

And now. I have to be careful not to be too pushy—my son has now taken up the clarinet at school!

Caden loves music too and we love to dance although is favorite is for me to pick him up and spin around and around and I tell you, at 31 lbs that’s getting harder by the day!

Mason adores music, too! He loves to sing, dance, play toy instruments and especially my brother’s REAL drum set. I come from a long line of drummers (g-grandfather, grandfather, uncle and brother) and I suspect my little guy may get bitten by that bug. I just hope to keep the drum set at my parent’s house!

The Boston Pops show sounds awesome! Sometimes I wish we lived in a city so we could do more of those kind of things. We do have cultural stuff, but nothing of that scope.

Fun! I & N definitely enjoy music. I sing show tunes to them at meals and so many lullabies at naptime and bedtime. I didn’t know I would be able to remember the lyrics to songs my brothers learned for kindergarten spring concert! N. sings to herself all day long. I. loves nursery rhymes and finger songs. The Pops show will be great. : )

And I, for one, DO want to hear your complaining. Or at least acknowledgments that, yeah, this is HARD (and infertility complicates a lot of those feelings) and not every moment is pure bliss. Keep it real, Serenity!

That sounds like SO much fun!

I wish we had something like that around here.

I never mind hearing your complaining. At ALL. It only makes you real.

So cool. Fuss loves music sometimes, but I’m really hoping she’ll love it like/we do. She loves to dance to music (sometimes it’s the music in her head) but hasn’t really started singing along yet. A friend gave her a baby keyboard and she ADORES it.

The stickies love music too! And it’s truly amazing to see what strong preferences they already have. It’s so fun. And great news about the Pops! The kiddos would LOVEsomething like that. You’ve now got me thinking: must look around!

And I’ve never thought of your blog as whiny. Literally never. I know it might feel like that from your end, but it doesn’t read like that from mine. Just an honest blog about real life. Good stuff. :-)
