Aw shit.
September 3, 2009 at 10:08 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 13 CommentsI have a good friend S. She’s awesome. She needed IVF to conceive her second daughter, and though she didn’t always say the right thing when we were struggling, she kept calling me. And checking in. And telling me that I was going to be a parent someday.
He husband called tonight. And told us that last week she found a lump in her breast.
And that they just found out that it is cancer.
And she will not only have a lumpectomy, but perhaps a mastectomy.
And she starts chemotherapy this month.
I’m absolutely gutted. For them, for her two young daughters, for the babies she wanted to have.
And now won’t, since chemo will fry what’s left of her eggs.
And I’m scared for them. For the journey she’s about to embark upon.
Please keep them in your thoughts.

Starting chemo so quickly? Oh crap. That means no time for egg retrieval for freezing? Man that sucks. It ALL sucks.

Perhaps she could have her ovaries harvested and then reimplanted later? This article mentions a new procedure that may allow her to keep her fertility.

Sorry to hear about your friend. What a hard thing to deal with, especially with young children.

I’m sorry to hear this. My sister got breast cancer last year when she was 36. This is the reason I was a surrogate for her. She was able to do one round of IVF prior to starting chemo/radiation to retrieve some eggs (she had no children, I gave birth to her twins 3 weeks ago).
I am hoping they found your friends cancer early. My sister’s had not spread. She had to do both chemo/radiation and had a lumpectomy. She is now very happy, healthy and cancer free, just waiting for all her hair to grow back! I wish the same for your friend!

Hope all goes well for her. Extra sad when it affects someone we are close with.
